Cops 'n Bobbers...Get Hooked on Fishing!

Getting hooked on fishing not drugs or
violence is the goal of this annual fishing event when youth from a variety of
social service agencies pair up with police officers for a day of angling.
Guided by law enforcement officer volunteers, youth attending the
catch-and-release event learn how to properly cast a fishing pole, bait a hook
and savor the thrill of reeling in a wiggling, splashing fish. Youth also
meet a canine officer and explore police vehicles during the event. And,
everyone leaves with a new fishing pole and encouragement to participate in
fishing or another hobby instead of drugs or violence.
Cops 'n Bobbers is unique because fishing
is a sport where youth can feel a sense of immediate accomplishment regardless
of their age, sex, physical or mental capabilities. Fishing offers youth a
challenge and gives them the opportunity to think through their feelings and
problems while keeping their hands busy. It teaches the skills of discipline,
conservation, self-reliance and patience. Plus, provides youth with a positive
memory involving a police officer.
